Affiliate Marketing: Getting Started

Getting started in affiliate marketing is really quite easy, but too often, many people mistakenly think it’s a lot easier than it actually is. In most cases, the only thing you need to do to join an affiliate program is to fill out a form. That’s the easiest part that there is. But there is still work to be done if you are to be successful.

The first objective is to find a profitable market or niche. This can easily be done in Google or by reading magazines. Let’s start with Google. Do a search for any topic that interests you. Interest in what you hope to sell is important, and later, you will learn why. Make a list of things that interest you, and do a simple search in Google for each thing.

Pay close attention to the sponsored ads. This tells you that money is being spent in this market. Now, do a little logical thinking. As a business person, would you spend money on advertising that is not making you money? Absolutely not. So, if there are sponsored – paid - ads for a topic in Google, money is being spent in this market, which means that there is profit.

The same is true with magazines. Visit your library and look at the past three issues of a magazine that relates to your interest. Pay attention to the ads. Do the same ads keep appearing? If the answer is yes, this is a profitable market, and you are ready to move forward.

What about the competition? What about them? 90% of all people who sign up for an affiliate program will not do anything to market it at all. Of the 10% that will market the product, 90% of them will do it wrong, and won’t make much money, if they make anything at all. The competition just decreased in size by leaps and bounds. Don’t worry about the competition. Concentrate on promoting your affiliate products and services to the best of your ability – let the competition worry about you.

Once you’ve chosen your market, or your niche, you are almost ready to get started, but there are several other things that you need to do before you can call yourself an affiliate marketer. First, you need to make sure you have the right tools. Then, you must find the programs, understand the terms of the programs, and finally understand how to choose the right programs.

Blogging - A Network Marketer's Secret Weapon

With so many sites now offering free blogs, and in some cases free hosting as well, there can be no excuses for not creating your own blog. As a network marketer you want to receive as much traffic as possible to your own unique affiliate links, and blogging is a great way of doing this.

Think of your own blog as another piece of virtual real estate. The greater your presence on the internet, the more chances there are of people receiving exposure to your offer.

As regards the subject of your blog, there are various things you can do. You could post any articles you write that relate to the program you are promoting on your blog, or you could simply post other people's articles on there. I personally recommend writing your own articles and posting them on your blog because this way you will be adding fresh unique content, and therefore you will be rewarded for this through higher search engine rankings. Just make sure that you submit your articles to the article directories at least a week after posting them to your blog. This ensures that the search engines have plenty of time to spider your site and credit you for being the original publisher.

If you don't wish to put articles on your blog, you could personalise it by talking about your own unique experiences of the product or program that you are promoting, on an ongoing basis. You could also write your own unique review of the program, making sure to not only mention the major benefits and features of the program, but also to highlight any slight faults inherent in the program for added credibility. People will appreciate your honesty as most so-called reviews are nothing more than hyped-up sales pitches.

Whatever you post on your blog, you should make sure that you include prominent links to your own unique affiliate links (and your other websites / blogs if you so wished). I suggest putting these links in both the side bar, and at the end of every post you make, if appropriate. Talking of which, after every post be sure to notify the various search engines by using 'ping' services like Pingomatic and Pingoat. This is a very simple process and will help to bring extra traffic to your blog in the long run.

To conclude, blogs are a great tool that many network marketers, including myself, are using with great effect. With all things being equal, blogs tend to rank higher than conventional websites, helped by the fact that they are generally updated with fresh content on a regular basis. Combine this with a good link-building campaign, and you can start to receive a lot of exposure for your network marketing program. All this from a free blog that takes just a few minutes to set up.

Viral marketing tips and traps

Viral marketing is one of the most effective, and cheapest, forms of marketing for any affiliate program. There are a number of ways to make any viral marketing campaign more effective, and a few of our favorites are listed below.

Focus on content
The best way to create a viral product is to provide valuable information or entertainment to the public, while at the same time focusing information on your main product. For instance, an affiliate for a seller of fishing products could provide a valuable article on the top fishing spots in North America. It is easy to see how this information would be very useful to all types of fishermen, and how the article can spread quickly through word of mouth.

It is important for the content you provide to be focused on information, and to not be seen as just an ad. While it is fine to include some subtle suggestions to buy your affiliate’s products, the main focus of the viral product should be to provide valuable information to your target audience.

Urge the reader to take action
The viral product should include some sort of information that urges the reader to take action. The action can be either visiting your squeeze page or clicking through your affiliate link to buy a product. Again, it is important to make this suggestion as subtle as possible, and to avoid the impression that the article is nothing more than an ad.

Urge the user to give the product away
When creating your viral product, it is important to let the reader know that they have your permission to give the product away. Many readers are uneasy about passing on content for fear of copyright issues, so it is important to let users know that they have your permission to pass the product along and give it away.

In addition, many viral products are designed to be brandable, meaning that the user can adapt the product, change some of the links or even add their own links. Allowing people to customize the product you create will encourage them to give it away.

There is no doubt that viral marketing can be a powerful tool to drive targeted traffic to both your web site and those of your affiliated merchants. By following the suggestions listed above, you should be able to create viral products that quickly spread around the world, and bring back business to you for many years to come. Many viral products created years ago are still out there on the web, continuing to provide free marketing and free advertising for their original creators.
