Opportunity Starts at Home
By Dassana Jayalath
For many people struggling on a low income, going into business seems like something that other people do. Surely it must require special skills, a good education and lots of starting money? The truth is that, whilst these things can help, none of them are really necessary, especially if your new business is based at home.
To start a home based business, all you really need is a good idea. What product or service can you provide that other people will want to buy? This could be something sophisticated like designing webpages, or it could be a manual skill like pruning trees. Although your home will be your office, your activities could be based at a variety of locations in your local area. If you're not sure what useful things you could do, get out and about and look at the things which are lacking in people's lives, the things which might make their lives easier. Starting a successful business is all about identifying a niche market.
Although the activities of people high up in the corporate world can seem shrouded in mystery, the truth is that basic business skills are not very complicated. You can learn more about them in your local library, or via the internet. If you don't have a home computer, this is one of the most important things which you should consider investing in. Simple computer software, much of it available to download for free, can help you to keep track of your accounts and your company's appointments and obligations.
Several websites on the internet offer free guides to building a business plan. This can help you to attract funding from investors based in your home area, as well as giving you access to locally based government grants and low-rate loans. It will also outline what you need to do to keep your business running smoothly. This is mostly about balancing the money you have coming in against the money you have going out. Your local tax office can give you advice on when and how to pay any tax due on what you earn, and can also let you know which expenses you can write off against tax. This will include a share of the fuel bills, telephone and computer costs for your home.
Running a home based office has several advantages over working from special business premises. Not only is it cheaper, it saves you time and energy on the daily commute, time and energy which you can put into making your business work. It also means that, if necessary, you can be there in the middle of the night to deal with an emergency. Working from home means having flexible hours - if your friends want to go out on a Thursday night you can join them, sleep in the following morning and make up for the lost time on Saturday. You can fit your schedule around family commitments and other activities which are important to you. You can also work extra hours when you need to finish an important project with far less disruption to your life than would otherwise be the case.
When you're based at home, nobody else will be watching your work over your shoulder. If you need to take extra time over a particular task, or if you need to look something up, you can do so without attracting disapproval. Your computer can make it easy to check information you're not sure about, though you should be careful to use only reputable sites for reference. Spell checkers and other office software can help you to produce professional looking documents even without training.
Running a home based business is something anyone can do. If you have the drive and the commitment, you can make it work for you.

Online Home Business: Is it For You?
By Paul Majestyck
Know thyself. It's the first rule of success in every human endeavor from self-realization to online work at home business opportunities.
If you're planning to go into e-commerce in a serious way, you owe it to yourself to take a look at this crucial question: Is the Internet really for you?
How do you know, for sure, that you're cut out to make a success of your new online home business? Okay, you've got the product, idea or service. Yes, you either have your website up, or you know what you want on it. And absolutely, you have developed marketing and financial plans you believe will work.
But have you thought about the difficult aspects of running a home business alone? Have you looked into your own psyche to see if you have what it takes, and if an online home business will be good for you in the long run?
Let's examine some of the aspects of working at home that the vast majority of small online business owners never even consider:
To create, build and grow your online business requires a great deal of dedication in order to succeed. That means time, focus and self-motivation. If you have a hard time just getting out of bed unless there's a job outside the house, with a time clock, you might want to reconsider even at this early juncture. The willingness to put in time when you'd rather not, and the self-motivation to keep cranking are character traits shared by all successful online home business owners. And the lack of these traits spells almost certain doom.
Perhaps you're already accustomed to working more or less alone, and feel you truly are a self-starter. Then check out the next paragraph.
How flexible is your mind? You won't have a secretary, or a manager, to go to figure out filing methods, computer repairs, taxes, business legalities, or any number of a host of problems that will, without a shadow of a doubt, rear their ugly heads. They will all have to be solved by…li'l ole you. Can you do it? Can you do it without losing your focus and dedication? Yes? Then move on.
Are you a talented organizer? Among the things you will have to organize, and organize well, to succeed in your online home business, are your own working hours versus your hours outside of work, as well as your ideas and goals for your business itself. If you are abysmally lacking in this quality, an online work at home business is probably not really for you.
Better to find out before the fact than after. And if you're happy with your answers, you'll go into your online business with more confidence!

Non technical ways to drive more traffic to your affiliate program
By Cody Moya
Like many things about the internet, driving more traffic to your affiliate program can be complicated unnecessarily. In reality, some of the most effective ways to drive traffic to your site are also some of the simplest and least technical.
Some of our favorite low tech ways to drive traffic through your doors are:
- Add fresh, original content to your web site on a regular basis. Adding interesting, intriguing and useful content is one of the best ways to boost your traffic numbers and keep potential customers interested in what you (and your affiliates) have to offer.
- Update your web site content on a regular basis, perhaps as frequently as weekly. Those who visit your web site and find nothing new to see will quickly find other web sites to visit. It is best to keep the articles on your web site short, preferably under 800 words.
- Publishing an ezine is another great low tech way to boost traffic to any web site. It is important to tailor your ezine to your target audience. For instance, if those on your subscriber list signed up to learn about fishing, they probably will not be interested in receiving an ezine about gardening or knitting.
Publishing an ezine allows your subscriber list to get to know you better, and to come to look upon you as an expert in your field. People tend to trust the advice of those they regard as experts, and that fact an increase your conversion rate and sales as well as boosting your raw traffic numbers.
- Include reviews on your web site. Including reviews on your web site will further boost your credibility with your target audience, as well as providing you with a subtle marketing tool for your affiliates’ products.
- Provide your visitors with a quick way to bookmark your site. This is one low tech step many affiliate program managers fail to take, but it is also one of the easiest steps to take. Give your visitors a quick link to bookmark your site, and you can be sure they will return again and again.
It is important to remember that many people will stumble on your web site completely by accident, either through a search engine query or a link from another site. It is important that these surfers be able to find you when they are ready to make a buying decision.
- Try serializing some of your web site content. Providing a series of articles, instead of one long article, is a great way to encourage visitors to return week after week. Another great strategy is to provide the first article freely, and then require your visitors to subscribe to the rest of the series.
There is no one “magic bullet” to successfully marketing an affiliate program, but through a strategic use of these tips, you can drive more traffic to your site and grow both the credibility and the income of your affiliate program.
