SEO - Natural Linking Strategies

By Cody Moya

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be the difference between a small, barely profitable or visible website and a traffic magnet website. There are a lot of ways, both good and bad, to influence the search engines. Some search engines react to certain strategies better than others.

Some even have conflicting strategies that they react to. To document all of these things would require a significant number of pages and research that goes beyond the scope of this article.

However, there are a number of things that can be documented that will work for most if not all search engines. And let's face it; there are really only 3 that make a difference between a successful and an unsuccessful SEO strategy.

They are the big three: Google, Yahoo and MSN. These three search engines in any given month are responsible for over 90% of all internet searches.

So, what is this article about? It's about what you can do as a website owner that will influence the search engines using commonly accepted practices of linking to other websites (outbound) and getting website links (inbound) back to you.

There are basically 4 strategies that a website owner usually will employ to increase their website value in the eyes of the search engine. They are reciprocal linking, one-way linking, multi-site linking and directory linking.

A website owner should not think that using just a single strategy is the right answer - sure it will help your SEO but it won't be the Best answer. The Best answer is to employ all 4 techniques and to do it naturally.

Each of the four linking strategies has specific descriptions that can be summed up as:

1. Reciprocal Linking = Site A links to Site B, Site B links back to Site A

2. One-Way Linking = Site B links to Site A

3. Multi-Site Linking = Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, Site C links to Site D, and Site D links back to Site A. Could be 3..N number of sites involved.

4. Directory Linking = Site Directory A links to Site A

That seems simple enough but it takes time and effort to perform all 4 strategies and most website owners aren't willing to spend the time or don't have the time to spend on it.

As a website owner, SEO needs to be one of the highest priority tasks that you need to address, just after Order Processing and Fulfillment and Customer Service. Without free traffic from the search engines, other traffic generation strategies that usually require payment must be engaged.

Now doing the 4 strategies above is great, but it gets even harder because you have to do it in a way that doesn't trigger the search engines to enforce a penalty upon your website. No one except the search engine engineers know all of the exact penalties but we have some good theories for some of them.

The first is the rate at which links are created. There is a certain threshold for creating links that is too fast. It's possible that the threshold is a sliding scale and is related to the age of the website according to the engine.

For example, a young low-traffic website should not normally be getting 1000 links a month whereas an older website that gets a lot of traffic could be OK to get 1000 links a month. As you progress in your linking strategies make sure you keep this in mind, especially if you are thinking about buying links.

The second is that having a link to every site that links to you will likely reduce the value of the links. In other words, if all you ever get is Reciprocal Linking, you will likely move up the SERP's (Search Engine Results Page's) but you won't reach your sites full potential. Having a mixture of all 4 strategies will appear more natural to the engines.

The third is having all inbound links to your site on "linking" pages will make those links less valuable than having a natural link on a contextually relative page for a percentage of the inbound links.

The higher you can drive this context percentage, the better your website will rank. These types of links are often some of the most difficult links to generate an exchange for because it requires more time and effort for both website owners.

The fourth is to have links inbound from all different ranking sites. If all you have linking to you is page rank 6 and 7 sites then you are likely to be sending the message that you purchased your links and that is not natural to the engines. Some would argue that purchasing links for driving traffic is just fine and it is.

However, you should not expect the search engines to give those inbound links very much weight when calculating your SERP positions. It is significantly more natural for you to have a large number of rank 1 and 2 inbound links and a decreasing number of inbound links as you move up the page rank scale (0 - 10).

The fifth is to have the text of you inbound links varied. It isn't natural to have every website that links to you to have the same text on the link description. The natural tendency would be to have a certain percent be the sites name, but after that it should be a wide variety of description.

Your link text description is a key factor for how your site/page will rank, so make sure that you keep that in mind as you specify your preferred link text description on your website.

Finally, it would be best for a good percentage of your inbound links to appear within the text of a page that appears natural for the reader of that site. And for those links to not all point back to the home page of your website. It's most natural for a good high quality link to appear in the text of a page and have it point internally within your site.

So, when you begin or continue your SEO activities keep all of these things in mind and don't be impatient. Impatience could incur penalties or worse. Your website could end up in the "sandbox".

It is rumored and becoming more concrete that Google supposedly uses a sandbox that questionable sites are put in until they have aged to a point that Google no longer feels that they are being manipulated. Many of the search engines use similar protection schemes to eliminate spam sites and manipulation sites to keep their SERP's from being cluttered.

How To Start A Successful Home Internet Business

By Bluey Johnson

Starting a successful home based internet business is the dream of more and more people everyday. Is it any wonder? A quick look around and it seems that there are any number of internet entrepreneurs making obscene money from their online venture. So how do they do it? The following steps may help you in your search for an online income.

Have something to offer.

The first step in starting a business online is to have something that your potential customers want. You may already have an existing business service or product which you need to promote, or an idea in mind for your website. In that case you only need to establish a web presence and begin your marketing.

However, the biggest hurdle for many aspiring home business operators is finding something worthwhile to sell. If this is your problem, one of the quickest solutions is to become an affiliate. An online affiliate is basically a salesman for someone else’s product. Good affiliate programs do exist, and most are free to join.

Find a good web host

Once you have your product in mind, you then need a internet hosting service. Depending on the nature of your business, it may need to be specific to your country or location. If so, you are looking for a hosting service with that in mind.

If location is irrelevant, price and standard of service will be of prime importance. For some, a site build it type of service may be the priority, as they lack the initial understanding necessary to build their own website. Others may be looking at creating multiple websites & therefore want multiple hosting capacity with the one provider. Email services, database capacity, or secure transaction services are all options that are available.

Whatever your requirements have a good look around & select a web hosting service based on your needs.

Select an appropriate domain name.

Your domain name is important. Ideally it should reflect your product, and contain the words your customers are searching for. It is a good idea to register your domain name with a paid hosting service rather than getting a free domain as part of a membership site. Having an independent domain will stand a better chance of being indexed in the search engines.

Build your website

Building your website will take time & practice to get right. If this is something you don’t have, you might consider a service such as site build it that can do this step for you. Otherwise get an HTML editor and some templates and go for your life. Take some time with this step as it will save you from needing to make big changes later. Design your pages with good on page optimization strategies in mind. For additional website revenue, you might like to sell advertising space on your pages.

Promote your site

Once you have your site published, the real work begins. Unfortunately, not everyone out there has been waiting for your new site to become available. In fact, you will be lucky if you even get visited by a few stray people who appear to be lost.

Website promotion is either big money or hard work, sometimes both. You should be prepared to part with a little of your hard earned cash in the short term for some sort of paid promotion such as good third party traffic generation services or pay per click programs, A word of caution, when using paid promotion programs, monitor your operating cost closely, otherwise things can get expensive. These kinds of services will help with immediate traffic, but independent linking is essential for search engine rankings, and longer term free traffic.

Obtaining links from other content relevant websites will bring in repeat visitors from those sites. Not only that, but quality inbound links will help lift your site’s placement in the search engine index. The better placed with search engines those site are, that link to you, the more valuable the link to your site becomes.

Linking strategies alone form the basis for huge business on the web these days. Link exchange programs, article writing, press releases and blogging all form part of the gigantic search engine optimization industry. Take the time & make the effort necessary to learn how to work these strategies, and they will in turn work for you.

If owning a successful home based internet business is your dream, then there is nothing to stop you. Don’t get distracted and put off by promises of instant riches, rather concentrate on building a lasting business based on quality products and good optimization techniques. Spend time promoting and linking your site, and enjoy the learning curve. The financial rewards will then be assured.

7 Powerful Ways to Market Your Home Based Business At Little Or No Cost

By Lisa Taliga

When you’re starting up your home-based business, you’ll want to attract clients whilst minimizing the impact on your purse strings.

Here are 7 very powerful marketing tips that you can start using immediately to get your business off the ground. They cost either nothing or very little in terms of cash outlay, but do require an investment of your time.

Let me go into these in a little more detail:

1. Tell everyone what you are doing

Get the word out there quickly. If you’re chatting to friends, relatives, even to the hairdresser, take the opportunity to tell people that you’re going into business for yourself. Who knows – they might know of someone who needs your services! I have been recommended to two lucrative ongoing clients through friends of mine.

2. Writing and submitting articles

Writing and submitting articles to websites and ezines is a powerful way to gain exposure and build credibility on the internet. Write an article about the benefits of working with your type of business and look for ezine directories that would be interested in posting it. You will be surprised at the results this method brings you.

3. Giving out and distributing business cards

Get professional-looking business cards designed as a priority. Think of them as your calling card. Carry your business cards EVERYWHERE with you, even to personal functions and events. You never know where or when you will meet people who are interested in your services. Your business cards will also get passed on to other people who, sooner or later, will call you out of the blue.

4. Registering with business directories and networks

Run a search on the internet for suitable business directories and networks – many of these offer free listings, which will give you valuable exposure for your business.

5. Participating in online discussion forums

There is a wealth of forums and message boards where small business owners ‘meet’ online to help each other out and toss ideas around. Which forums and boards would your target market visit?

6. Volunteering in your local community

This is a great way to get exposure in your local community and showcase your skills. Does your local council or not-for-profit organization need any help that you can provide? I got great results with this strategy - one of my best clients came to me through my volunteer efforts. I designed a website for a local not-for-profit organization in my free time. They then referred me to an ongoing client who is still with me today.

7. Using an email signature

Each email that leaves your computer should have an email signature attached. This means that you’re advertising your business every time you send, reply, or forward an email. This may sound obvious but it continues to amaze me how many people pass up this valuable advertising opportunity.

So there you have it, seven powerful ways to get clients at little or no cost. These are tips you can start using immediately. Before you know it, you’ll be working from home in your own business.
