Copywriting is the SECOND most important skill to master for online success.

What is the most important skill to master if you want to make a fortune online?

Many online marketing experts and gurus say that copywriting is the most important skill you need to learn to build a profitable online business.

And while I agree, copywriting is a critically important skill to master. There is another skill that is even more important and profitable.

In fact this skill is so powerful that if truly mastered, it will make you a great copywriter by default.

So what is this powerful skill?

Simple.  It's testing.

I am not aware of a single world-class, millionaire marketer who is not also a fanatical tester.  If I had to choose one skill that differentiates those who make millions of dollars per year online and those who struggle to make a few thousand dollars each year, it would be testing.

Not copywriting. 

Not list building.

Not traffic generation.

Not joint ventures.

Not product creation.

Not search engine optimization.

Not affiliate marketing.

But testing...

Granted, all of these other skills are important.  And having excellent copy to begin with will give you a strong foundation to begin your testing and it will help maximize your initial conversion rate.  But over time and with continual testing even the most mediocre initial copy can be transformed into a profit pulling masterpiece.

(The real magic occurs when you combine world-class copywriting WITH world-class testing...  That's the stuff fortunes are made of!)

Unfortunately, after performing web site evaluations on hundreds of sites in dozens of niches and consulting on a daily basis with web site owners and online marketers who are desperate to improve their conversion rates, it's painfully obvious that less than 1% of online businesses conduct ANY form of regular testing. 

They are leaving obscene amounts of money on the table and don't even know it!

It doesn't matter if Gary Halbert, Michel Fortin, Clayton Makepeace, John Carlton, Gary Bencivenga and Dan Kennedy all sat down at a table and wrote your sales letter together.  What ever masterpiece of written persuasion generated by that world-class dream team of copywriting geniuses could still be improved over time by continual testing.

In fact if you talk to any of the top copywriters (both online and off-line) they will all tell you that the way they became a top copywriter is by learning what works and what doesn't through rigorous and continuous testing.

So the bottom line is this...

You can have the greatest product in the world.  You can spend $15,000 on a sales letter written by one of the best copywriters on earth.  You can attract dozens of superstar joint venture partners to e-mail your offer to their 100,000+ subscriber mailing lists.  You can drive millions of visitors to your web site each month with top paid and organic search engine listings.

But... if you are not continually testing and improving your conversion rates, you are still leaving a tremendous amount of money on the table!

Relevant, unique content is the key to obtaining and retaining targeted traffic.

Dissecting that sentence:

- Targeted traffic is the specific audience you are trying to reach; usually your customers.
- Unique content is content that no one else can provide.
- Relevant content is content that has meaning to the targeted traffic audience.

And if you have that relevant, unique content, your customers will be happy and keep returning.

But good content is more than just relevant and unique; it is rich in keywords. These are the Reeses Pieces that keep the spiders happy; if you have lots of keywords placed intelligently in your text, the search engine spiders (cataloging programs that look for and list websites) will rank your site higher than they would a similar site poorer in keywords.

The importance of this cannot be underestimated. Most customers reach a site for the first time by using a search engine. They feed the engine search terms, and the engine looks up and spits out the relevant websites ­ that is, the ones that rank highest with those keyword search terms.

That's a hard task, but the harder one is this: if you don't capture your customer's attention within about ten seconds, they will click onto a different site. Yes, they will leave you. Web surfers are fickle creatures; if you don't believe it, pay attention to your own behavior when browsing the web.

But you can captivate them with excellent content, the sort that captures their attention and gets them focused on your site. Ideally, it should also sell to them whatever it is you have to sell, while also keeping them interested and informed. And the best way to have excellent content is to provide informational articles.

In today's electronic world, every website may be its own publisher, its own newsletter or magazine, its own advertising agent. Every website may be in the business of providing the information that has, until now, mostly been delivered by commercial magazines.

More than just providing information, articles can give you guru status. If your website's articles are well-written and provide intelligent advice, your customers will know that you are an expert in your field. Answering their main questions ensures that they will come back with followup questions. And you can even get interactive, with a FAQ where you can provide the answers to questions posed.

Some people are confident enough in their own writing ability to go ahead and write their own content articles. More often, though, webmasters either don't have the time or the skills to write articles to load online. This is where article brokers like like www.YourOwnArticles.com can come in handy.

An article broker sells private label rights to articles to webmasters. Say you run a website on how to care for anacondas. A good article broker can find you keyword-optimized articles written by a professional that will work perfectly on your website.

And you put your own name on the article. Suddenly, you're the author of "Top Ten Reasons You Should Never Feed Alligators to Anacondas." It's keyword optimized, so that when web searchers type "anaconda" into a search engine, it returns your article near the top.

And it's well-written and informative, so your viewers see you as an expert and are more likely to bookmark and return to your website than they would otherwise.

If you want to crank it up a notch, you can buy a whole ebook, not just an article. Ebooks offered for free on your website show your customers that you are not only an expert, you know enough to write a book on the subject. If you offer this informative ebook this is an impressive thing.

Better yet, included in the ebook is your URL, so that the reader can click and open your website right up, enabling them to access any new information on your site and not incidentally supporting your site by viewing advertising, purchasing things from affiliates, or purchasing items from you.

Ebooks can generally be purchased from the same article brokers you purchase articles from. They are simply documents created in MS Word and saved to PDF via Adobe Acrobat or OpenOffice (a freely downloadable program compatible with MS Word).

You can write your own if you feel confident in your abilities, but most webmasters choose to purchase them from professionals.

How to Start a Business from Home: Writing for Traffic

Each week my articles are read by TENS of THOUSANDS of people. I would like to tell you that it is because I am such a wonderful writer. I would like to tell you that it is because my reputation as an Internet Guru compels people to listen to everything I say (kinda like those old E.F. Hutton commercials here in the US). I would like to say that it is because the things that I say are so profound that no one else provides the information that I do.

The reality is much less ego-boosting.

The reason that so many people read the things that I am writing is this: I make sure that I get the articles that I write in front of as many people as possible. I'm not neccessarily more talented, more pithy, more knowledgeable than anyone else, I just might be a little more persistent.

Each week more than 20,000 people visit my main site. While it is tough to know exactly how many of those people come from an article they caught on a web site or in an eZine, the number is around 15% or 3000+ people per week.

That's more visits than most websites get in 3 months--in fact, it is more visits than most sites get in a year. If you want to see your traffic steadily increase over time, begin writing.

There are several reasons why writing produces quality traffic to ANY site.

First, when you write, you become the expert. Assuming that you can do a decent job of presenting yourself and your material, most people will never ask for your specific credentials.

When people see you as the expert, they will take your advice.

Remember this: people buy from people they know and trust. Whenever someone reads one of your articles--even if it is posted on your own website or in your own eZine, you become more trustworthy and they become more likely to visit your site and buy.

A second reason why writing produces quality traffic is that writing "brands" your name.

In an upcoming issue I will be looking at the idea of "Branding". But here is a brief definition: Branding is raising the recognition factor of a name or product.

Years ago I worked for a large insurance company, out of an office in Memphis, TN. Most of my clients were fairly well- to-do and were familiar with the company--one of the largest and most well respected insurers in the world.

I was eventually moved from the "big city" into a rural area of Mississippi.

That's when I ran into trouble.

The large, well-respected insurance company I worked for did all of its advertising in publications that were geared to the "big city" upper-class. I never had anyone in the city ask me, "What company is that again?" They knew who we were.

When I got to the small town, no one had heard of our big, impressive company. In fact, I was having to spend my time just trying to convince people that we were even a reputable company--though at the time we were the second largest insurer in the world!

That's branding. Putting your name out there and letting people see it. Every time someone reads an article with your name on it, your stock goes up a little in their mind. Every time someone sees your newsletter, you make a positive impression.

Over time some of these people will become customers.

Another reason that writing produces quality traffic is that writing for OTHER PEOPLE'S publications gives you an instant "referral" for your product, service or site.

When your article is picked up and run in someone else's eZine, you get their implied endorsement. Even if the editor doesn't tell the readers that they "specifically" endorse your product, you gain tons of respect in the readers' minds. The more targeted the eZine, the more respected the editor, the more weight being in that publication carries.
